Proper Fit
Height: Crutches should not make contact with the axilla
(armpit). No additional padding other than the standard crutch top pads should
be used.
Note: Pressure applied to the top of the crutch by either a
crutch that is too tall or by resting your armpit or leaning on the crutch tops
can result in serious damage to the nerves and blood supply to your arm. Avoid
leaning or placing pressure on the crutch tops!
Hand Grip: Since support
is made by lifting body weight with the hands, not the armpit, the hand grips
should be at a level so the elbow is slightly bent (20 to 30
degrees).
Proper Use
It is important to understand how the
doctor wants you to support your lower extremity.
• You can bear some weight on the injured leg (partial weight-bearing).
• You are not allowed to apply any pressure on the injured leg (non-weight-bearing).
These are very important questions to have answered before you can properly use crutches.
You will need to be instructed on proper use of the crutches.
It is very important that you understand the proper techniques and that you are
able to demonstrate the proper way to use the crutches before you leave the
clinic.
Remember
• Always bring your crutches with you to clinic appointments.
• The tips on your crutches and/or cane should be replaced if worn out.
