1. Once you have recovered from anesthesia you will be allowed to leave the
surgical center. You will need someone to drive you home from the surgical
center.
2. A prescription will be given for post-operative pain control.
You should try to get prescription filled before surgery.
3. A bulky dressing will be wrapped over your shoulder. Be sure to keep the dressing dry. A shower
or bath may be taken on the fifth day following surgery, after the dressings and
sutures have been removed. A sling will be provided for your arm.
4. You will have an automatic pain pump that will deliver anesthetic to the shoulder.
Depending on coverage you will also have a cold therapy unit to decrease the
post-operative swelling
5. Be sure to have an appointment at the clinic three or four days after surgery.
6. Home exercises will be demonstrated during the first post-op appointment. In
approximately two weeks you will begin formal physical therapy, unless otherwise specified.
7. After surgery a machine will be delivered to your home to start passive range of
motion. This is called a CPM. It will be provided by private vendors.
8. In the first week after surgery it may be more comfortable to sleep in a
recliner chair or in a semi-sitting position. This will keep the shoulder
above the heart and make you more mobile.
Contact the office if:
1. Your shoulder pain increases daily rather than decreases.
2. Your shoulder becomes hot, red, and/or you run a fever.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call the
office for further instructions. After clinic hours call the answering service
and ask for the doctor. Inform the operator that you just had
surgery.
